MEN’S FULL - ENGLISH BREAKFAST Eat, chat and prayer together. There was a very interesting meeting with a really filling breakfast on the first Saturday in February. Guest Speaker Rob Thomas, who compered our Comedy Night gave a talk about his work as a comedian and the trials and tribulations in climbing the slippery slope from Open Mic nights to the higher realms of the comedy circuit. He particularly dealt with the issues of being a Christian and a comic. Rob was the winner of new act competitions, at both the Comedy Cafe and the Up The Creek venue recently. Paul Kerensa, a writer of 'Miranda' and 'Not Going Out' says Rob is "making waves across the comedy circuit... one to watch" Rob runs a regular Comedy evening at a venue near London Bridge - details to be posted soon. |

Some 450 children made a Christmas Journey in our church in the week starting 5th December. Not all at once, of course! Year 2 children came from three local schools; their arrivals carefully timed so that groups of 15 or so could each share this special experience. From their first stop, where, in ‘Godly Play’ the story of creation unfolded before them in the simplest language, and with the simplest props, they journeyed to Mary’s kitchen, to Bethlehem’s hills, to the stable and the wise men’s tent and back to Godly Play. Each child had a taste of Mary’s bread and shared her astonishment as Gabriel, (six foot odd and with a voice that rang round the church) brought his amazing message. Headdresses and a little imagination transformed the travellers into shepherds caring for a wonderfully varied flock. In the stable, puppets on film worked their magic, reminding us of the down-to-earth humour of the medieval miracle plays, while the wise men’s tent with its rich colours and jewels, its glimmering lights and strange perfumes provided a ‘wow’ factor. Refreshments were provided, and a brief opportunity for artwork produced some imaginative angels. High heels are in! At every stage there were eager questions and answers, but between scenes the journeyers were extraordinarily peaceful, quite focussed on ‘What comes next?’ That question and others about God’s ‘broken present’ were left for adults and children alike to turn over in their minds. Chief planner Jonny Price, our Youth Worker, had asked the church to support the project in prayer, and as the children in Godly Play said, with their thumbs us, ‘It was good!’ |

Here is Father Christmas sitting by the tree with his sack of presents and some of the lucky people receiving their gifts. We can also see one of the tables, where the pudding obviously went down very well!
