Parish Boundary

The Parish of St. Augustine stretches from the railway at Petts Wood to the A21 at Bromley Common, and includes the Coppice Estate. The parish boundary runs along the middle of several roads, including Green Way, Balfour Road and Mayfield Road.

The parish system in England and Wales is such that every person dwelling in the country has the pastoral care of a local church. Any resident of a parish may request baptism, be married in the church and be buried in the churchyard (if any).

Ultimately the system is the responsibility of the Church Commissioners, but at the local level administration is conducted by the diocese (in our case, the Diocese of Rochester.) When planning boundaries, effort is made to follow obvious features such as railways, streams or the edge of fields, although in urban areas this is not always possible.

In some areas there may be a Parish Council as part of the local authority, but the boundaries of the civil parish and the ecclesiastical parish do not necessarily coincide.
